This internship is part of the Schwartz Community Based Internships. This premier opportunity allows UR undergraduate students to access traditionally unpaid opportunities that highlight the value of the humanities in the workplace. If selected, students will receive a $5,000 stipend over a minimum 270-hour period in a non-for-profit organization in the Rochester, NY region.
Disaster Cycle Services Mass Care Internship
Purpose: The Disaster Cycle Services department works in partnership with governmental and community partners through all parts of the disaster cycle – preparedness, response, and recovery. The Mass Care team in particular is responsible for supporting response efforts of Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Emergency Support Function #6 including, sheltering, feeding, reunification, distribution of emergency supplies, and disability integration.
Reports to: DCS Mass Care Staff Liaison
Responsibilities:
Intern will primarily work on increasing our capacity through the rekindling and development of relationships with our sheltering locations/partners.
- Contact government and community organizations to renew prior sheltering agreements
- Identify information that requires renewal including updated contacts, or facility capacity
- Coordinate with volunteers to preform shelter site surveys to define capacity and ensure accessibility in shelter sites.
- Secondarily, intern will be afforded the opportunity to explore other aspects of emergency management including involvement in Local Emergency
Time Commitment:
- 20 hours per week – negotiable depending on the needs of the internship.
Qualifications:
- Fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and submission of vaccine status and supporting
documentation in Volunteer Connection if participating in in-person activities and/or performing work in a Red Cross facility. - Enthusiastic about American Red Cross programs
- Strong public speaking skills
- Experience with relationship management is preferred
- Knowledge of Emergency Response & Management preferred
The Internship is an unpaid developmental experience where candidates must be enrolled in a degree program at the time of the internship.
Training:
- Orientation to American Red Cross
- On the job training with supervisor
- National Shelter System Training
- Other American Red Cross courses as required for secondary interest.
