Software & AI Engineering Intern
About Us
Schreiber Excavating is a second-generation, family-owned commercial sitework contractor founded in 1999. The company performs earthwork, installs utilities, pours concrete, paves, operates trucks, and produces and sells screened topsoil across Western New York. Schreiber Excavating had 12 employees when the current president, Zach Schreiber, took over the business. Today, the company has 25 full-time employees.
What You'll Do
A new scoped challenge per sprint, drawn from a menu like:
▸Schreiber field app. The mobile app every crew member uses to run a job: pre-job kit, daily scope, materials, locates, photos, voice EOD capture.
▸Topsoil ordering on schrex.com. Customers buy and schedule delivery online. Real product, real users, revenue you can measure.
▸Truck booking tool. GCs book Schreiber trucks self serve: capacity calendar, quoting, confirmation.
▸Voice-first end-of-day capture. A 90-second voice memo becomes a HeavyJob diary, time card, quantities, and tomorrow's brief.
▸Variance dashboard. HeavyJob actuals vs. HeavyBid estimates, surfacing bad cost codes weeks earlier.
▸Bid-discovery agent. 30+ public portals scored against Schreiber's profile.
▸Change-order engine and platform. Read every diary, flag every trigger before it's missed, then manage flag to pricing to invoice.
▸Equipment utilization view. Telematics turned into reallocation calls.
▸In-house HCSS hosting. Run our own infrastructure to replace HCSS Cloud.
▸Codify Jeri's judgment. An hour a week turning what's in our accounting and HR manager's head into documented systems.
You'll work directly with Zach (President), Dave (operations and trucking), Ryan (estimating), Rick (superintendent), Brody (senior project leader), Greg (equipment), Jeri (accounting and HR), and Mike (safety). HCSS API credentials, real bid history, real telematics data, and modern AI tooling: Claude, Cursor, OpenAI APIs, whatever the problem calls for.
Who We Are Looking For
▸Builders. Janky working prototype on Friday over a beautiful slide deck on Monday.
▸AI natives. You've used Claude or ChatGPT to do real work and know a good prompt from a bad one.
▸Systems thinkers. You can hold the office, the field, the trucks, and the customer in your head - all at once.
▸Comfortable with ambiguity. Nobody hands you a JIRA ticket. You find the right problem, scope it, and ship it.
▸ Field comfortable. Talk to a foreman on a job site and a developer on Slack in the same afternoon.
▸Curious about real businesses. Construction experience not required. Curiosity about the work is.
