Volunteer and Social Media Coordinator

This internship is part of the 2024 Humanities for Life (HFL) Summer Internship Program. This premier opportunity allows UR students to access traditionally unpaid opportunities that highlight the value of the humanities in the workplace. If selected, students will receive a $5,000 stipend over a minimum 270-hour period in a non-for-profit organization in the Rochester, NY region.

Job Summary: Run weekly food distribution, recruit volunteers, manage social media accounts, engage in case management.

Tentative Schedule: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays 10:30am-3:30pm and Wednesdays 8am-1pm

Location: In-person; some remote work is negotiable

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Run a weekly food distribution program that has been serving needy refugees in the City of Rochester since March of 2020
  • Recruit volunteer drivers, food packers, and all other means of volunteers
  • Design and schedule social media content for recruitment campaigns, donation campaigns, and other projects (Facebook, Instagram and our website)
  • Manage social media correspondence & volunteer coordinator email
  • Get involved in planning large programs and distributions suchas Back to School Drive
  • Assist refugee individuals and families with reading mail, completing paperwork such as TA/Snap benefits, Social Security Benefits, and housing applications, and referring to other organizations as necessary (through use of telephonic interpretation services when necessary)
  • Recruit like-minded Rochesterians who want to volunteer serving the refugee community here at Mary’s Place
  • Coordinate days/times to meet with potential volunteers at Mary’s Place to give a tour, discuss volunteer opportunities, and provide information about volunteer paperwork
  • Maintain all volunteer paperwork in filing system, update spreadsheet, and deliver documentation to be processed
  • Update the Executive Staff about special volunteer inquiries (who wants to volunteer and what they are volunteering for)
  • Update volunteer and intern hours in database/ input data related to various programs
  • Other related duties may be assigned, negotiated, or added

Skills and Characteristics:

  • Attention to Detail, Motivated, Personable, Strong written and verbal communication skills, Works well independently and on a team, Comfortable working with diverse groups of people, Empathetic, Flexible, Creative
  • Preferred: Experience with Microsoft Excel, Canva, Facebook and Instagram; Ability to run code or willingness to learn
