Summer Internship Opportunity: Education Department - Rochester Philharmonic 

Position: Education Intern 

Duration: Summer 2024

About Rochester Philharmonic: The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) has been dedicated to education and outreach to audiences of all ages since its founding a century ago. It was one of the first American orchestras to use radio to enhance outreach and education to local schools. Today, extensive in-person programs throughout Rochester and the Finger Lakes region, as well as virtual programs available to audiences worldwide, introduce young people to the wonder of live symphonic music and provide resources for educators in alignment with the NY State Department of Education curriculum, building the next generation of musicians and music lovers. Engagement and enrichment programs for adult patrons provide opportunities to connect with music, musicians, and artists. Our education and community engagement programs serve over 25,000in the region annually, including over 15,000school-aged children. 

 Internship Overview: The Education Department at the Rochester Philharmonic is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic intern to join our team for the Summer of 2024. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the preparation of the upcoming 24/25 season and gain hands-on experience in various aspects of music education and administration during the RPO’s summer season. 

 Key Responsibilities: 

Assist with RPO Summer Season Education and Community Events: 

  • Provide assistance at outdoor summer concerts to include help with onsite production and marketing efforts
  • Participate in summer educational events, such as the RPO’s Instrument Petting Zoo, throughout the community

Children Activities and Classroom Materials: 

  • Collaborate with the Education team to create engaging and age-appropriate activities for children attending RPO events.
  • Assist in the development of classroom materials that align with the educational objectives for future programs.

System Streamlining: 

  • Work closely with the department to identify areas for improvement in workflow and assist in creating systems to streamline processes.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of internal communication and project management.

Youth Orchestra: 

  • Support the Youth Orchestra Music Director and Youth Orchestra Manager in preparations for the upcoming season.

Website Content Development: 

  • Collaborate with the Education team as well as the Marketing and Communications team to develop and update content for the Education Department on the organization's website.
  • Ensure that website content is informative, engaging, and aligns with the department's goals.

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of orchestra and ability to read music.
  • Passion for music education and a genuine interest in fostering a love for music among youth.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software.
