John H. Berman Memorial Award

John H. Berman Memorial Award

If you are a senior who plans to attend law school in Fall 2024, apply for the John H. Berman Memorial Award!

The award of approximately $6000 will go to a graduating senior who “demonstrates the self-motivation, achievement, leadership, concern for others, reliability, and commitment to high moral principles” that characterized Mr. Berman’s life. Mr. Berman was a highly esteemed attorney and UR graduate who practiced law for 57 years. The award is endowed through contributions from Mr. Berman's widow, his friends, and the law firm of Woods Oviatt Gilman, LLP where Mr. Berman practiced for 6 years until his death.

Students may apply for the award or be nominated by faculty or staff members. Applications are to be submitted through Handshake and should include:

  • Resume
  • Unofficial Transcript
  • A brief 300-word statement describing your reason for wishing to study and practice law, and how you believe your qualifications match the values that were important to Mr. Berman. If your personal statement for law school addresses these topics, you may use that statement.
  • 2 letters of recommendation. These letters can be ones that you used for your law school application. The preference is that at least one letter is written by a faculty member. Students and recommenders can submit them directly to scott.sheehan@rochester.edu

The award is available to students attending US law schools only as well as students attending a US school with a satellite campus in a different country.

The deadline for applications is Monday, April 15, 2024, at 11:59 pm.

*Disclaimer: The committee can choose to split the award between equally qualified candidates at its discretion.
