Community Development Intern

This internship is part of Schwartz Community Based Internships. This premier opportunity allows UR undergraduate students to access traditionally unpaid opportunities that highlight the value of the humanities in the workplace. If selected, students will receive a $5,000 stipend over a minimum 270-hour period in a non-for-profit organization in the Rochester, NY region.

Mission Statement  

SEAC promotes quality of life within  

the Rochester’s south east area by connecting individuals and community partners to essential  resources.  

Organization Description  

The South East Area Coalition, Inc. is a Neighborhood Preservation Company that facilitates  community and economic development in southeast Rochester. We help the citizens who live  and work in southeast Rochester to accomplish goals and initiatives for their neighborhoods and  businesses. We support existing neighborhood and merchant associations, as well as help to  organize citizens into groups to generate sought-after results.  

Job Description  

The South East Area Coalition is looking for an individual with a strong passion for non-profit work and/or grassroots community development and the desire to strengthen the agency’s mission and programs within its Four Pillars of Focus: Anti-Poverty Initiatives, Neighborhoods/Communities Revitalization and Development, Youth Advocacy, and Local Businesses Support.   

The Intern position consists of a semi-flexible full time schedule of 40 hours per week, although some evenings and weekends will be required due to events and meetings. The Intern will be working with all staff members to promote SEAC events, programming, fundraising opportunities, and business/community support projects, and will report directly to the Executive Director. 

SEAC Community Development Intern Responsibilities  

• Actively participate in and solicit support for SEACs various projects, programs, and  initiatives as needed 

• Advocate SEAC’s Mission and represent its grassroots values 

• Work closely with the SEAC Community Engagement Team (Fundraising & Outreach Coordinator, Community Liaison, and the Community Engagement Committee) as needed to ensure smooth, successful outreach, workshops, and sponsorship development. 

• Planning and executing community development festivals and facilitating Neighborhood    

    Pulse program.  

• Perform other duties as assigned.  

SEAC Community Development Intern Qualifications and Skills  

• Friendly and personable. Ability to work collaboratively 

• Demonstrate flexibility and creativity when faced with challenges  

• Demonstrate willingness to gain additional knowledge in relation to SEAC, its programs, community partners, and neighborhood diversity and history  

• Flexibility/comfortability working with a diverse group of individuals, personalities,  community partners, and associations in a variety of environments  

• Strong verbal and written communications  

• Required to travel to community meetings in Rochester, mostly in the South East area 

• Ability to work some nights and weekends for events and initiatives throughout the 

summer 

• Computer knowledge including, but not limited to Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and 

Canva, and social media familiarity 

• Familiarity with Rochester geography and neighborhoods 

• Interest in accessibility and inclusivity 

• Self-motivated and open to working alone and with teams
