Humanities for Life Summer 2022: Camp Teacher or Programming Internships at GCV&M

1st Position: Programming & Special Events Intern

2nd Position:  Camp Teaching Assistant supporting Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion


Programming & Special Events                                       

Position:  Programming & Special Events Intern supporting New Initiatives, Diversity, & Inclusion
Reports to:   Sr. Director of Programs & Events Managers – Programming Dept.
Status:  Internship, seasonal, part-time, summer 2022 (in partnership with UR H4L program)
 
Position overview:      Programming & Special Events Intern will support all aspects of planning and delivering GCV&M programs and special events, including: helping investigate program content ideas, best practices, and ways to support staff and guests; helping with on-site set-up, breakdown, and management of events; and maintaining program materials. The role will particularly help support new initiatives that address inclusion and expand the diversity in program content and visitor participation. Genesee Country Village & Museum is located 20 miles outside of Rochester and is the largest living history museum in New York.
 
Duration:    Ten weeks, 30 hours per week, June 13 through August 19, 2021, on-site in Mumford, NY, most weekends required
 

Responsibilities:

Provide direct support for planning and delivery of programs and special events (70%)
·      Support event setup, delivery, and breakdown for major GCV&M events including:
Honoring Juneteenth, Independence Day Celebration, Civil War Living History Weekend, Making Music Weekend, and A Novel Weekend.
·      Help with smaller Museum programs as needed, helping strengthen connections between the Wehle Gallery, Nature Center, and Historic Village
·      Support visitor engagement by creating guest day sheets and wayfinding signage
·      Serve as a point of contact for accessibility and inclusion questions and support day-of
 
Investigate program content ideas, best practices, and ways to support staff and guests (20%)
·      Identify reliable, accurate sources for content that support expanding the Museum’s ability to engage staff and visitors in stories that represent diversity
·      Investigate similar institutions for equity and inclusion practices and perspectives that may support GCV&M program and event capacity building
·      Update the GCV&M app with information and content that supports events and overall guest experience
 
Support programming and events operations (10%)
·      Support general maintenance of event materials, help maintain program and event planning records and perform administrative tasks as needed.
·      Help maintain relationships with and records for performers, vendors, and other program and event partners

Minimum Requirement:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and be a high school graduate or equivalent
 
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Prior experience (including as an intern or volunteer) delivering programs to the public preferred
  • Coursework and/or related experience (including volunteer) in diversity studies, recreation, psychology, event planning, or related area of study preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of equitable and inclusive practices
  • Comfortable engaging and working collaboratively with others
  • Ability to work efficiently in an organized manner with minimal supervision
  • Able to provide own transportation to/from Mumford, NY
 
Physical Environment and Expectations:
GCV&M programs and special events take place both indoors and outdoors. The Nature Center and Historic Village campus cover about three square miles. Indoor spaces used for program/event activities may be in historic buildings in small spaces where care is taken to support safety and preserve Museum features and collections. Some but not all areas of the campus are accessible to individuals with physical disabilities. Program and special event support typically involve lifting objects up to 30 pounds, walking up to a half-mile at a time, and may involve the operation of tools and light equipment.
 

2nd Open Position:  Camp Teaching Assistant supporting Equity, & Inclusion

                       
Reports to:   Sr. Director of Programs & Family and Youth Programs Manager – Programming Dept.
Status:   Internship, seasonal, part-time, summer 2022 (in partnership with UR H4L program)
Position overview:      The Camp Teaching Assistant will teach camp classes as well as provide support for teachers and campers across multiple camp classes and will help provide mentorship and safe engagement in activities in a way that supports camp culture, diversity, equity, accessibility, & inclusion. Camps are week-long day classes, operating Monday through Friday from approximately 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Class sizes range from 10 to 15 campers ranging in appropriate age groups from 4 to 15 years old. Genesee Country Village & Museum is located 20 miles outside of Rochester and is the largest living history museum in New York.

Responsibilities:

Help guide youth in supportive and inclusive participation in camp activities; mentor and serve as a role model for campers while engaging with them and with all staff in an energetic, equitable, inclusive, and positive manner (40%)
·      Coach youth in productive and effective team play
·      Model use of positive, supportive communications
·      Assist teachers in employing strategies to help campers participate successfully in camp activities and lessons
·      Assist teacher with camper and staff safety including enforcing mask-wearing and social distancing
 
Teach camp classes (30%)
·      Help supervise and deliver “all-camp” special interest programs with a focus on inclusive participation
·      Serve as a substitute camp teacher across most programs
 
Support camp daily operations (20%)
·      Help supervise campers during transition times, including monitoring bus loading/ unloading, before and aftercare, and during lunch
·      Assist with class set up and clean up and generally help keep camp areas organized
·      Support preparation for camp classes in the weeks prior to the start of camp including sorting supplies, preparing costumes, helping ensure that class locations are prepped, and helping with general camp administrative tasks
 
Review camp curriculum to help identify activities that support universally accessible and culturally supportive activities (10%)

  • Demonstrate commitment to health and safety and ability to discern physical and emotional needs of individual campers within the group

  • Prior experience working with children/ youth in a camp, educational, or recreational setting preferred
  • Coursework and/or related experience (including volunteer) in critical race/ diversity studies, education, recreation, psychology, childhood development, or related area of study preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of the importance of nurturing positive multiracial peer and friendship groups
  • Comfortable engaging and working collaboratively with peers, children, and adults
  • Ability to work efficiently in an organized manner with minimal supervision
  • Able to provide own transportation to/from Mumford, NY

Indoor spaces used for camp activities may be in historic buildings in small spaces where care is taken to support safety and preserve Museum features and collections. Some but not all areas of the campus are accessible to individuals with physical disabilities. Delivery of camp classes typically involves lifting objects up to 25 pounds and may involve the operation of tools and light equipment.
